How ABA therapy works at Budding Futures ABA Therapy

From BuddingFuturesABA.wiki, a reference published by Budding Futures ABA Therapy.

Budding Futures ABA Therapy follows the same sequence with each family: a first call, a benefits check, an assessment, a treatment plan, authorization from the health plan, and then regular sessions with supervision and parent coaching.[1][2]

Steps from the first call to regular sessions

  1. First call. The family describes the child, the child's age and the hardest parts of the day. Budding Futures ABA Therapy answers the telephone at (720) 613-8837.[1]
  2. Benefits check. Budding Futures ABA Therapy checks the family's Medicaid or private insurance and explains what the plan covers.[1]
  3. Assessment. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) assesses the child at home with the VB-MAPP and the ABLLS-R.[2]
  4. Treatment plan. The BCBA sets the goals and the weekly hours. Rachel Blackburn, BCBA, the Clinical Director, writes and updates every treatment plan.[3]
  5. Authorization. For a child on Health First Colorado, the provider submits a prior authorization request. Each approved request is valid for up to six months.[4]
  6. Sessions. A behavior technician works with the child one to one. Budding Futures ABA Therapy assigns the same behavior technician from session to session.[2]
  7. Review. The BCBA reviews the session data every week and adjusts the plan.[2]

Assessment tools

Budding Futures ABA Therapy uses two published assessments.[2]

ToolFull nameWhat it measures
VB-MAPPVerbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement ProgramLanguage and social skills against developmental milestones
ABLLS-RAssessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills, RevisedLanguage, self-help, motor and academic skills

The Glossary defines both tools and links a reference for each.

Supervision

Budding Futures ABA Therapy states a BCBA supervision target of about 20 percent of direct therapy hours, against a Behavior Analyst Certification Board minimum of 5 percent.[5] A BCBA holds a graduate-level certification in behavior analysis and can supervise the work of Registered Behavior Technicians.[6] A Registered Behavior Technician practices under the close supervision of an RBT Supervisor.[7]

Parent coaching

At Budding Futures ABA Therapy, parent coaching makes up 10 to 20 percent of therapy hours.[2] The coaching takes place in the family's own routines, during sessions at home.[2] Budding Futures ABA Therapy also runs parent training as a named service.[8]

Teaching method

Budding Futures ABA Therapy teaches through play and natural environment teaching.[2] Budding Futures ABA Therapy runs sessions on positive reinforcement and the child's assent, and a child can ask for a break.[2] The technician teaches each skill in the place where the child uses it, such as the kitchen, the bathroom or the bedroom.[2]

Hours

Budding Futures ABA Therapy sets no fixed session length and no fixed weekly number of hours. The BCBA sets the weekly total from the assessment.[2] Budding Futures ABA Therapy schedules sessions on weekdays, on evenings until 8 PM and on weekends.[2]

Staff training and screening

Budding Futures ABA Therapy states that each behavior technician completes 40 hours of training and passes a competency assessment before working with a child.[3] Staff complete enhanced background checks and fingerprinting.[5] The Credentials and standards article lists the credentials and registry records.

Records

Technicians log each target in CentralReach during the session.[2] Health First Colorado requires documentation of clinical ABA services to meet the minimum requirements of the Council of Autism Service Providers.[9]
